HAMPSTEAD PHYSIOTHERAPY TEAM The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice was established in 1978 by Torunn Banks and is managed by Joanne Tuckey, Practice Director and Elaine Lee, Practice Manager. The team also comprises seven Chartered Physiotherapists. Ronnie Abraham, Adrian Binns and Damon Newrick specialise in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Joanne Tuckey, Penny Brown and Ulrike Hammerbeck specialise in neurology / neurorehabilitation.
TORUNN BANKS Torunn qualified with a Diploma in Physiotherapy in 1972 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. In 2002 in Toronto (Canada), she obtained Diplomas in both Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Torunn has wide experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions and also food allergy testing and nutrition. She has a special interest in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Torunn is one of the earliest private practitioners in London and set up The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in 1978. She continues to practice physiotherapy by special appointment only. JOANNE TUCKEY Jo qualified with a Graduate Diploma from King's College Hospital School of Physiotherapy in 1990. She has specialised in neurology since 1992, working in several NHS hospitals, including The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, King's College Hospital and five years at the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, Homerton Hospital where she was the Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist. In addition, she has worked at a specialist neurorehabilitation centre in Germany. She completed a Masters degree in Neurohabilitation at Brunel University in 2000. She is currently Co-Chairman of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists interested in Neurology (ACPIN). She continues to teach on a variety of postgraduate courses. Jo joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in January 2006, as the Neurology Specialist and Practice Director. ELAINE LEE Elaine completed her Bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in 2002. During her studies in Seattle, she was employed for seven years with Wachovia Financial Services working in operations and compliance. In 1998, Elaine joined WorldLux as a luxury goods buyer and business manager. She worked closely with LVMH and the Richemont Group and led a team resulting in record sales. In 2003, Elaine relocated to London where she was employed at Selfridges working with an IT team training staff and managers. Elaine joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in April 2006 as the Practice Manager. Elaine is involved with the daily running and management of the Practice, including the liaison between accounts, health insurance and patients. DAMON NEWRICK Damon qualified in 1998 with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from Otago University. In New Zealand he was involved in treating professional athletes and worked with the Wellington Lions and All Blacks rugby teams. Damon moved to the UK in 2004 and has worked with the British Army Forces where patients undertook intensive physiotherapy and strength programmes. Damon joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in 2005 and also has a special interest in Biomechanics. Adrian qualified in 1996 with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from University of East London. He worked at several of the teaching hospitals throughout London including extensive periods in a leading back pain service at City and Hackney Primary Care Trust treating both acute and chronic back and neck pain. Adrian later spent five years in a Specialist Physiotherapist role in the Accident and Emergency Department at a busy London teaching hospital. Throughout this period he enhanced his diagnostic and rehabilitation skills in sports and acute soft tissue injuries whilst gaining affiliation to the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine (SOM). Adrian joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in January 2010 and maintains a keen interest in the diagnosis and rehabilitation of sports injuries and spinal conditions.
RONNIE ABRAHAM Ronnie qualified with a graduate Diploma in Physiotherapy from West Middlesex University Hospital School of Physiotherapy in 1987. He worked in the NHS, industrial orthopaedic sector and private practice. Ronnie specialises in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and has had extensive training in spinal manipulation, Cyriax orthopaedic medicine and Mckenzie self treatment techniques. Ronnie joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in November 2010. Ulrike qualified in 1995 with a BPhysT from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She specialised in neurological physiotherapy and has worked in South Africa, the UK and Germany in a wide variety of rehabilition settings. Ulrike has worked as a senior neurological physiotherapist at King's College hospital for seven years and obtained her MSc in Advance Physiotherapy from University College London in 2006. Since 2006 she has taken up a research post at the Institute of Neurology, University College Hospital where she is conducting her PhD, investigating rehabilitation strategies for stroke patients. Ulrike joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice on a part time basis in 2009. Penny qualified with a BSc (Hons) from the University of Brighton in 1997. She has worked in various London NHS hospitals and specialised in neurology since 1999.
She most recently worked as the lead physiotherapist for Orthotics at the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (RNRU) at Homerton Hospital. Prior to this, she worked for seven years in the RNRU Outreach Team specialising in treating neurology patients in the community. She completed her MSc in Physiotherapy at the University of East London in 2011. Penny joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in 2011. Alexandra qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist with a BSc (Hons) from Birmingham University in 2003. Since then she has worked in the NHS, but for the past six years has been working in the private sector, specialising in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. During this time, she has worked with a wide range of both acute and chronic conditions and additionally frequently uses Acupuncture and Clinical Pilates to maximum client outcomes.
She completed a Masters degree in Manual Therapy from Coventry University in 2009. Alexandra has recently joined The Hampstead Physiotherapy Practice in July 2011.
